who was burned while riding on an ac transit bus. not surprisinsurprisingly, she' horrified about what happened to her child but grateful for the local support from her community. cheryl hurd is in oakland with the details. >> reporter: support from sasha is coming from so many different directions. tonight, support is coming in the form of rainbow colors. >> they're calling it rainbow ribbons for sasha. >> reporter: sasha's mother described why macarthur boulevard in oakland is more colorful tonight. >> we put some down on the stop on the 57 line. >> reporter: that's the bus line sasha was traveling on when the 18-year-old fell asleep monday. the suspect set the victim's skirt on fire. >> horrified and the only thing that's really gotten us through this is knowing that we believe that they are going to make a full recovery.

>> reporter: police arrested 16-year-old richard thomas on tuesday. the alameda county district attorney charged him as an adult. it has been reported he told police he was homophobic. he is facing a hate crime charge. the suspect's grandmother reacting to thomas' arrest. >> what kind of boy is he? >> he's a good kid. a very good kid. >> crandall describes her kid as being an a gender teenager. >> they do not identify with either male or female. >> reporter: so sasha's parents feel it's appropriate to use rainbow ribbons to show the 18-year-old support. a ribbon is attached to a pole outside lisa mitchell's sal lon on macarthur boulevard. >> you should be able to be who you are, wherever you are, without having to worry about things like public transportation. youth on a public transportation and getting set on fire. >> it's just sad because nobody should be -- nobody should do this to a child. like it's just not even right.

>> the community has just come out and has really supported us. and we just feel loved, and we feel like sasha is loved and accepted. >> reporter: sasha's mother says that the 18-year-old is recovering nicely at a burn center in san francisco. watching all the support from bed with a smile. reporting live, i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. more details now. a touching show of solidarity for sasha today. students, teachers, even the principal wore a skirt to school. one student told us he dressed just like sasha from head to toe to support his friend. >> lots of people wearing a skirt for you. everyone here loves you, man. just get well soon. >> i want them to know that we support them so much and we want to make sure they feel strong and they feel so supported. because we all support them and we love them and we want them to know that we are here for them.

>> some students visited sasha in the hospital. they say sasha is in remarkably good spirits. now a developing story and what may be the most devastating typhoon to hit the fill mans. haiyan is now heading to vietnam but it left plenty of damage. at least 100 are dead and forced nearly 800,000 from their homes. it knocked trees to the ground and had residents wading through knee-deep water. communication has been cut off across the country. we have team coverage tonight. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking the supertyphoon but we begin with george kiriyama. >> reporter: the bay area is home to 400,000 filipino marines. one large community is here in milpitas. one woman said the typhoon clearly hits home. >> very, very strong.

they can actually hear it and feel it. >> reporter: powerful winds and rain ripped through the central part of the philippines tearing off rooftops and forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee from their homes. gladys' family was one of them. >> i'm so scared about them. i'm very worried about them. actually, you know, i can't sleep last night because of the worry. i'm so worried. >> reporter: her sister lives in the region of the philippines hit hard by a 7.1 earthquake three weeks ago. >> so they were all scared. some of my family was actually, like they are staying in a tent also. because of the earthquake. so it's just like they don't know where to go. >> a lot of people from our church were concerned. >> reporter: eight members of the park victoria church, including the senior pastor, are in the philippines right now on a mission. they posted on facebook saying they were okay but experienced a lot of rain and wind. >> they are trying to help some

of the people over there who may have lost some of their roofs. really glad to hear from them they are doing well. >> reporter: the milpitas mayor born in the philippines says his city is joining community organizations in raising money. >> it's a gesture of generosity and it's a gesture of love of our country of origin as well. but at the same time, it's more of helping people in need. >> reporter: and we are learning filipino american churches throughout the bay area will be organizing relief efforts during their sunday services. live in milpitas, george kiriyama. it's now saturday afternoon in vietnam, which is where this storm is headed. jeff rainier now tracking the path. >> reporter: the storm bands stretching out several hundred miles from the center. the philippines located right here on our map. it's now moved off to the west of the philippines. so they are beginning to be in

the clear from this storm system. as we get a look at the perspective of this, we want to compare it to one of our strong storms of the past. hurricane katrina. and you can see here when you compare the satellite loops how much larger in size typhoon haiyan is and still currently is at the moment. as we get a look at the overall intensities when you compare it to hurricane katrina, we had winds associated with this. potentially making this the largest storm ever when it comes to hurricanes and typhoons. hurricane katrina at landfall had winds 15929. superstorm sandy, 95 miles per hour. when you look at each different storm it really is tough to compare them because each one has different characteristics but overall you get a sense of the size. right now that storm has weakened from earlier today. winds at 130 miles per hour, but it is on a path towards vietnam by saturday as a strong category 2 storm system. we'll be tracking the intensity of the path of this closely over the next 24 hours because it

could still shift. for the latest updates on this typhoon, as well as any new information on how to donate go to nbcbayarea.com. exactly one week after a gunman shot and killed a tsa agent, another scare at l.a.x. authorities were called to the ticket counter in terminal two when a man said he had a destructive device in his bag. police evacuated the immediate area and the man was detained by police. that man later told the cops he was just joking. about an hour later, a limo driver at terminal three called police to report his passenger had a weapon. that person was taken into custody for questioning. from politicians to convict, today a judge sentenced a former santa clara county supervisor to one year in jail for a huge political scandal. his punishment comes after pleading guilty back in march to charges of corruption and misusing public funds. he blamed his gambling addiction for the crimes.

in addition to jailtime, he'll be on probation for three years. the judge also ordered counseling and told him to never gamble again. an attempted carjacking and a stolen dog. both part of a crime. and san jose police need your help in solving it. detectives say the robbery happened on story road next to kelly park last month. the victims robbed of their dog. they say the suspect, juan carlos chavez, brandished a gun and tried to take their car. they say he initially answered an online ad to buy a pomeranian puppy. once he had the dog in his arms, that's when he pulled the gun. the folks managed to drive off but chavez took the dog. they have a $250,000 warrant for chavez's arrest. the dog is a female and would now be about 3 months old. ahead at 11:00, controversial comments about women and sports. also, the other zuckerberg. behind the scenes with mark's

bad idea but says his language was offensive. >> i understand his point that we wouldn't want to change that, but just the way he went about it and the words he said to get his point across, that's not acceptable. >> reporter: kevin wright thinks the radio host has it all wrong. >> i wouldn't say women are trying to change sports. i just think cult surchanging. >> reporter: the new folk sus reducing physical and emotional injuries. but wright says everyone is entitled to their opinion. >> he's not giving -- he's giving his opinion of the news. you have to differentiate between the two. >> sports are set to the dial of men. >> reporter: an emotional debate over bruce and his rant are raging. perhaps this facebook post congratulating him on all the publicity is the real story. no comment tonight from management at knbr and bruce did not want to comment off air either but he told me he is expected at work on monday.

we have new details about the bullying scandal in the nfl. jonathan martin who was allegedly bullied will meet with the nfl's special investigator next week. the league has commissioned a full investigation. martin's attorney said the abuse went well beyond hazing and harassment for the year and a half he's been with the team. martin, who is a stanford alum, claims he was also physically attacked. now despite the claims, many of martin's teammates in miami are supporting richie incognito, the alleged bully. it's yet to be seen if it's the next blockbuster social media company. twitter stock prices fell today on its second day of trading. shares of twitter tumbled more than 7% closing at $41 a share. despite today's drop it's still up 60% from yesterday's initial ipo price creating many millionaires and some billionaires, eventually. twitter is one of the biggest social networking companies in the world with some 250 million users. is it a blessing or curse to

have the zuckerberg name? it's a blessing when it comes to her bank account and perhaps a curse when it comes to creating her own identity. mark zuckerberg's sister is doing just that. gone from facebook, she's now launching her next project. tonight, the interview with randi zuckerberg. when you look at her facebook timeline, it's a lot like everyone else's family gatherings, weddings and costumes. then there's the name. >> is there a time you don't give out your name or just say, i'm randi? >> sometimes i like people to make a first impression of me that's not based on my last name. it's really refreshing to make human connections with people that aren't based on, oh, who are you and what can you do for me? and then sometimes, you know, i do a little name dropping. 31-year-old randi zuckerberg, yes, mark's older sister has rocked and rolled

ever since she arrived in the silicon valley. she's now written two books, part memoir and part self-help. navigating kids and adults through the world of high tech. but randi navigated away from mark just hours after she organized president obama's visit to facebook headquarters. >> my name is barack obama, and i'm the guy who got mark to wear a jacket and tie. >> i thought, to me, the most interesting part of your book was the day you left facebook or at least told your kid brother, president obama in town. that was a huge thing. especially around here. the town hall that you hosted. and then you walked up, you walked home. you bumped into mark at home and how did it go from there? >> we lived in the same neighborhood. i just kind of blurted it out that i felt like i was ready to leave. it's one of those moments where you say something and then you are like, oh, words go back in. but it had clearly been in my mind for a long time in my heart.

i am so grateful for the experience that i had at facebook. i'm so grateful to my brother for including me in that amazing journey. but it was also really important to me to make a name for myself, too. and that's something you'll read in the book a lot is my own struggles with loving facebook but not wanting to always be mark zuckerberg's sister. >> your mom is a psychiatrist so i'm not going to go there. is it mark's big sister or is it randi zuckerberg. >> i talk about how i felt i had to perform to a much higher standard than my colleagues to even be taken seriously, the same way. but again, it's, obviously, opened up a lot of doors for me. a lot of opportunity. but one thing you have to know about mama zuckerberg is you go into that house and all four of her kids are equal. doesn't matter if you've created a multibillion-dollar company or just baked an apple pie, every kid's achievement is great. >> tell me about the negotiation

process. what was the contract offer and how was it done? >> i was coming from basically a minimum wage job in new york. i don't know how i lived on the salary i made. so all i could think of was getting a better paycheck. i didn't know anything about equity, stock options, silicon valley and start-ups. that was not a world i knew anything about. so when they my brother offered me a comp package that had equity and salary, i wasn't thinking about the equity. i said i want to not make minimum wage anymore. he's like, no, no, no, trust me. >> where was the deal done? was it on a cocktail napkin? >> on a cocktail napkin in the original facebook office above the chinese restaurant in downtown palo alto. i did not save the napkin. i wish i did because that would be framed somewhere right now. >> a colorful personality indeed. the zuckerberg clan is migrating from new york. the sisters and parents have all bought houses near mark in the

palo alto los altos area. we've posted this segment on our website. you can find our other high-profile interviews there. go to nbc bay area.com/the interview. let's turn things over to meteorologist jeff ranieri. >> we're getting so lucky as we head throughout this weekend. while we need the rainfall for those of you that don't want it, here's where the luck comes in. the latest storm system to the north will stay right there as we head throughout saturday and sunday keeping us dry. but we will have to worry about for tomorrow, some areas of fog developing. at the immediate coastline, numbers in the low 50s. we'll have patchy fog here for the bay and also for the interior valley. by the noon hour, temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s. by the afternoon, numbers in the mid-70s. outside to the sky camera network. you can see mainly clear conditions. but we are tracking dew points ranging 43 to 46 degrees. and that's good enough with that low level noich that we'll likely see patchy fog for the

interior valleys. similar to what we had this morning. now you can also see off towards san francisco, marine layer of 700 feet. fog will yes be staying at the coastline as well as we head through the morning hours for tomorrow. let's get your saturday forecast in here. i think we have done it for tomorrow. looks incredible in the south bay. once some of those patchy low clouds are clear. 72 in palo alto in the low 70s. and 73 in morgan hill. 75 in gilroy. numbers slightly warmer. 74 in walnut creek. 74 back to livermore. 72 in dublin. 72 castro valley. 60s near the bay where that slight ocean wind will be a little bit stronger. we'll also find 60s in san francisco down to half moon bay. low 70s in napa and also sonoma with berkeley at 67. heading out to the game there at candlestick on sunday, and you can see jacket weather. pretty typical. temperatures in the low 60s at 3:00 p.m. by 5:00 p.m., numbers in the 50s

at this point with fog expected to push on across. on your seven-day forecast, we have some changes. so while the weekend does look great, by tuesday, we will see the possibility of showers coming into the forecast. but notice this. it's only 30% as we head throughout next tuesday with temperatures near about 70. earlier in the week it looked like a lot more rainfall. but still some hope potentially for showers. numbers steadily drop and then climb as we head throughout thursday and friday of next week as well. hopefully you'll like what you see. not too bad. we've been about 48 days without any kind of rainfall. so we definitely need those raindrops. and i do also want to close out this friday weather segment with something big and huge. you want to watch the weather over the next couple of days very closely. all i'm going to say is there's something huge happening in the weather department. you'll not be able to miss it. >> it's huge. >> yes. >> it's big. >> i know what he's talking about. okay, jeff.

new video into us. the very top of the new world trade center in new york city. the building's spire and beacon were tested for the first time tonight. when fully lit, the glow from the lights can be seen for more than 50 miles away. together the beacon and spire stand 408 feet tall. and that's the issue. the exact height is being debated. the building was going to stand 17,76 feet tall. the nation was founded in 1776. at that height, the building would also become the tall nest the nation. here's the rub. the architects thought the 408-foot broadcast antenna we just showed you would count toward the build aeg overall height. stand-alone antennas are not usually counted in determining the height of a building. a committee of architects will now decide if the broadcast
